Proof That Microsoft is Losing the Battle

In case you are wondering what the computer platform of the future will be…

I gave a lecture today at BCIT about digital marketing and the law and noticed a lot of glowing white Apple logos staring back at me. Struck by how many Macs were in the room, I asked the students to hold up their computers.

Here are the number of Macs in the classroom:

Here are the number of… er, is the only PC in the room.

    I work on a PC at work and at home. Why? At work, I am required to use one. It is the only computer the university supplies to its employees.

    At home, there is only one reason for me to use a PC instead of a Mac — the software that I have collected (and more importantly, have both mastered and depend desperately on) over the years is only available for the PC. There are (and in a couple of cases, never will be) a Mac equivalent. I am stuck in the land of the PC, like it or not.

    I am not particularly fond of Windows computers, and as much as anyone might wish otherwise, the PC is still the computer of choice in the business world. Until Apple finds a way to make Windows software run on a Mac — natively inside the Mac OS, and not in Windows that happens to be running on the Mac — the Mac will never replace the PC.

    I put the onus on Apple to make Windows software work on their OS because the software manufacturers will never do that — they have too much to lose. But if Apple were to succeed in making that happen, they could put Microsoft out of business inside of a couple of years.

    The group you were lecturing to is Apple’s demographic. Young 20 somethings that eat the Apple marketing up. It is “cool” to have an Apple PC. I doubt Apple will kill Microsoft but I think it’s leaning towards a more even balance of PCs and Macs.

    It seems to me that if you wanted a data point about the computer platform of the future, you should have asked them to hold up their mobile phones.

    Maybe that’s representative of marketing people but that is a very specialist slice of the market. I’d argue that marketing people are a good fit for what Apple are looking for (brand conscious, price insensitive)

    Really? Macs have always been the choice of university students (when they could afford it).

    Your real proof would be doing it in a business meeting!

    You should also keep in mind that for graphics designers, which is what this lecture hall was filled with, Macs are the choice computers. Whereas in digital animation, PCs are the choice computers. Obviously, macs win. Duh, idiot.

    I’ve read that IE is slowly losing marketshare for a variety of reasons, one of which is that there are more alternatives on the market now and awareness of those products. For me though my dislike of Microsoft in general is their increasingly controlling nature. When I buy a product I don’t expect to hear from that company unless the product is faulty but in MS’s case they are pervasive in what I do with that product. I respect their right to protect their intellectual property but theyvé taken it to Orwellian proportions. They crreated their own elephant in the room. They used to be good.
