What iPhone 3’s Voice Memos actually sound like (not bad!)

Sean Carruthers did a great review of the iPhone’s new Voice Memos application (comes with the iPhone 3.0 software update) the other day.

iPhone 3's Voice Memo app

One thing I haven’t been able to find any reviews of the actual audio quality, so I did my own test and I have to say… the quality is really much better than you’d expect. It can easily be used in broadcast production on CBC Radio One (which has stronger compression/limiting at the transmitter end), AM stations, and podcasts.

When you look at the file in iTunes (it creates a playlist called “Voice Memos”), it will claim a ridiculously high bit rate (around 350kbps) which may trick you into thinking it would sound, well, like 350kbps. Don’t let the numbers fool you. My tests sounded closer to around 128k, maybe a little higher.

Also, pay no attention to the (beautifully retro) VU meter. It really won’t help you. It has a clip light, but you’ll overmodulate around -3dB or -4dB, not 0dB like you should. Just keep an eye on it when you’re recording and when you hit -4dB, back the mic off a little.

Attached is the audio of a field test I did — a conversation between podcasters Mark Blevis and Paul Lyzun (videostudentguy.libsyn.com).

Have you tried the Voice Memo app? Have you used it in your productions? What has your experience been?

they;re better than blackberry's IMHO

I did a long recording (1 hr 8 minutes) that itunes refuses to sync – have you ever heard of large voice notes not being retrievable from the iPhone? I would LOVE to talk to anyone that has had this problem and has a solution – the voice note in question is pretty important to me.

I haven't heard of that specifically. I know you can email the audio
to yourself, but I believe when you do that it will chop everything
after the first three minutes.

If it's really important, you could always plug a MSM-(Male Stereo
Mini)-to-MSM cable from the headphone jack of your iPhone/iPod and
plug it into the Line In (often combined with Mic In on most computers
these days, sadly) of your computer and record it via analog.

Wow! The audio quality is very good. However, the conversation is between me (Mark) and Paul Lyzun (videostudentguy.libsyn.com). I do agree that Tim Coyne's show is a must listen. Paul's isn't bad, either. :)

Oops… thanks! Fixed.

Same problem as user above, 48 min. clip won't sync. Thought I was getting something valuable, but I guess not

Given that the app is called “Voice Memo”, Apple has given great value in the same way that Notes allows us to make short notes (I wouldn't write an essay with Notes). If you need to record 48 minutes, there are many audio recorders that are designed specifically for that purpose and are amazingly affordable.

i got a product. nice product = but this is awful that you wrote.

if it can record 7 hours – why i can't download it from my iphone?

kinda buggy, i think. programmers should fix it.

My voice memo seems to shut off after about 35 minutes. Any ideas?

Can anyone record more than 38 minutes. I am trying to record lectures for class. The audio is good but it seems to shut off after 38 minutes.

How do you downlaod voice memos onto your pc through itunes. I can not get mine to do it.
