Flip Mino HD and Flip HD: Review
I’ve had a chance to play with the Flip Mino HD for about a week or two now and I’m overall really very impressed. In the end, I prefer my own video editing software than the packaged one, but that’s just personal preference. I really didn’t miss the lack of zoom or focus since 95% of what I shoot is very basic “camera in yo’ face” stuff.
I did find the camera footage very shaky, though. I compared it to two digital cameras which record video and found the Mino HD to be noticably more shaky. (Footage was just hand-held holding and pointing at someone’s face and also walking around.) iMovie ‘09 wasn’t able to stabilize it much. Also, the footage is a bit grainy, but honestly unless you’re viewing it on a 50″ display, you’re really not going to care.
Overall, it’s a solid product.

Great video review, Tod!
Have to have something in hand for overseas trip next Thursday, June 4th and trying to decide between the Flip Ultra HD/Mino HD and a Sony Xacti.
Want to work mostly with iMovie 09, also.
Any suggestions as to which one? In addition, to your suggestion as to which product would be better suited — Brick & mortar availabilty for either brand? How quickly I can get it delivered from online?
Thanks so much for your help!

I use the Flip Ultra and there is no problem with shaky video. I am considering buying either the Mino or Ultra HD so glad to read your review.

Thanks Deb!
I’m sorry about taking so long to reply to this — on the day you’re leaving, no less. I’m afraid I haven’t had a chance to review the Xacti but, except for the shakiness (which iMovie ‘09 didn’t do a very good job fixing) I really liked the Flip HD products. Remember, though, it’s mostly meant for shooting things relatively close up — people near you and things. There is no zoom. This in itself might not make it the ideal “vacation” camera.

Considering that there are ten instruments involved, my Mino HD does a very reasonable job with the sound (mounted on the hard cover of the pickup truck that was towing us, with a Gorilla Pod and some duct tape):
